Door Hinges: Basic Details About This Essential Device

The door hinges can be described as the mechanical bearing which is used to create the fixed range of rotation between two things. Most doors are integrated with frames by using two or more hinges. When hinges are integrated into the door, then they will let the doors swing open and close.

The door hinges will stop rotating when they reach the highest limit. There are different types of hinges for different types of doors such as barn door hinges for barn doors. The hinges contain certain basic parts and these are described as below:

  • Leaf

The leaf is like a moving plate over the hinge which moves with the workpiece which is integrated with a hinge. Most hinges contain two leaves, rectangular-shaped plates which help in holding two workpieces together.

Usually, these leaves have holes that provide support to screws or fasteners. To properly install the hinge, fasteners are driven inside the holes and workpiece.

  • Knuckle

It is also known as node or loop. The knuckle can be described as the hollow tube which is placed between the hinge. It is not a separate part, but it is an integral part of the hinge. It is formed when the hinge’s leaves are joined together. Thus, it will lead to the formation of the knuckle.

  • Pin

It is also known as the pintle. The pin can be described as the narrow cylindrical-shaped plug which is situated at the hollow center of the hinge’s knuckle. The pin is shaped like a rod and inserted through the center of the knuckle.

It helps in holding leaves together. The two leaves of the hinge can be interlocked only when the pin is passed through the knuckle. If there will be no pin, then the two leaves will not stay connected.
