6 DIY Tips To Repair Your Window Glass

In an emergency, you may need to take responsibility for fixing your broken window glass. You may not reach the nearest glass workshop in time.

In such situations, you should carefully follow some repair methods on your own to fix the broken glass. First, you will need the following items for glass replacement:

  • Putty knife

  • Masking tape

  • Replacement glass

  • Window Sealant

  • Heavy-duty work gloves

  • Safety glasses

  • Hammer

Step 1:

First of all, you need to know your requirements and restrictions. After knowing your requirements, cut the replacement glass into an appropriate size.

Step 2:

If the glass to be replaced is severely fragmented, put on your glasses and gloves to carefully remove it. If the part is cracked, use masking tape to cover the cracked area crosswise. It won't let pieces of glass shatter all over the place when you take it out.

Now take a hammer and tap on the glass until it completely decomposes. Remove the broken pieces and sweep the remains from the glass. Remember not to let children walk in your work area.

Step 3:

With a putty knife, scrape off existing glazing putty, excess paint, varnish, and old glazier points. Also, remove the surrounding wood frame from one side of the glass.

Start with the longest window frames, then the shorter ones. Do this carefully without breaking them, you might have a hard time adding paint and varnish to the corners.

Step 4:

Take some window putty in your hands and soften it slightly as you do when using plasticine. Spread a thin layer of putty on the sides of the remaining frame and smooth with a putty knife. It acts as an adhesive to hold the new glass in place.

Step 5:

Secure the new piece of glass in the opening by placing a color flat on the wood strips. Use glazier stitches to adjust it to the right place. Carefully dust the spots with the putty knife, two on each side. Make sure they are properly seated in the frame.

Step 6:

Finally, reinstall the window strips in place by patting them gently. If necessary, use nails to carefully remove the old ones. The steps mentioned above will help you replace one or more panes of a glass door or shed window.

If you have to work on a large piece of glass, remove the window completely and lay it flat on the surface. For all glass repairs, you can trust our Artisan Vitrier Paris glass experts with the best standard services.
